Situated in the village of Mt. Carmel, this multi-gabled brick building served as a high school until its closing in 1922. In that year, the new Springfield Consolidated School was built and all of the Mt. Carmel students were transferred there. At the time of its completion, Springfields new building was considered to be second to none in its size, style, gym, and booster enthusiasm. Some of the family names to appear on the Springfield roster are: BLACKMORE, POHLAR, NAYLOR, UPDIKE, LINDERMAN, CRAIG, STIRN, FINCH, SCHULTZ, GATES, RUSSEL, SEAL and MCCLURE. Among the faculty members are to be found the names of Virgil DAVIS, Alfred LANDRETH, Mr. REED, and Irvin BLACKMORE. The latter was the principal of the school and the father of Edna who later became the spouse of Alfred LANDRETH who also served the school as teacher, coach and principal. Springfield High boasted the first all girl basketball team in the county. Mrs. Marge POHLAR HILLMAN was a member of that first team.
