In the forefront of the agitation for the establishment of a school of higher learning in Brookville were members of the local Methodist and Presbyterian church bodies.  Originally, only females were allowed to be part of the student body; however, several years later, males were also permitted to attend.  Tuition costs were relatively low, per semester rates varied from $3.50 to $5.00 per pupil.  Money was ever a problem to this institution, and, because of lack of funds, chiefly endowments, the school was forced to close in 1872.  In that year the building was sold to the town of Brookville.  From 1873 on, the building was used as a primary and secondary school for the young people of Brookville.
