Mt. Carmel, Indiana

Laid out in 1832 and 1836, the town took its name from the Mt Carmel Presbyterian Church, which was organized previously.
Mt. Carmel was the site of numerous early factories in Franklin county, including a shingle factory, carriage manufacturer/dealer, and the  famous Reed Factory of Bishop. It manufactured reeds for looms for woolen and cotton mills throughout the country for more than forty years. Mt Carmel was the home of the famous poet Louisa May Chitwood.
By the early 1900's,  Mt Carmel had a drug store, two general stores, a blacksmith shop, a steam sawmill and a hotel.
Today, the Mt. Carmel community is primarily a farming and residential community with an elementary school.
